Nuns Canyon, October 2017

Originally hired in March of 2017 by a Napa engineering company charged with developing this 280 acre Mayacamas Mountain property into a vineyard, I mapped the property into a 3D model and provided high-resolution ortho-mosaics using some 2300 aerial images captured over a 2 day period. The land was rugged, with elevation differentials of more than 1000' from top to bottom, and much of it impossible to access, but after several careful days of planning and inspection and 16 flights from varying elevations, the job was complete. Unfortunately, 6 months later, 80% of this beautiful property was consumed in the devastating Nunn's Canyon wildfire of 2017. I returned on October 28th, less than 2 weeks after the fire and began to "fly" the property again, this time under considerably harsher conditions. Spot fires were still burning and the ash on the ground and in the trees so heavy that I was forced to wear a respirator and protective clothing as I captured the images below.

This property, simply known as The Nunnery, is in the heart of Nunns Canyon where one of the largest and most devastating of the Sonoma wildfires of 2017 raged for nearly 2 weeks.
